Main Title

When PCB Real Estate is at a Premium

body-mm-intro

With electronics becoming more and more complex, a single printed circuit board is being designed to perform an increasing number of functions and operations. With high-density PCB designs fitting more components onto a board than ever before, PCB real estate is at a premium.

The future of the global high-density interconnect (HDI) PCB market looks promising with opportunities in the smartphone, computer, telecom and datacom, consumer electronics, and automotive industries. The global HDI PCB market is expected to reach an estimated $19.1 billion by 2027 with a CAGR of 4.7% from 2021 to 2027. The major drivers for this market are growth in consumer electronics market, miniaturization of electronic devices, and increasing demand for high performance devices.

3M Wire-to-Board System, 1.27mm (.050") pitch, 3M socket 451 & 3M header 452 Series

3M™ 450 Wire-to-Board Systems is a complete end-to-end interconnect system intended for wire-to-board applications using .025" flat ribbon cable. It is a two-part system consisting of a boardmount header and a wiremount socket. The mating components are designed on a 1.27mm or .050" grid. When compared to systems based on the 2.54mm (.100") or 2.00mm grids the finer pitch saves valuable space on the printed circuit board, yet still delivers on performance, reliability and cost savings.

3M™ Ribbon Cable Wiremount Socket Assembly 1.27 mm (0.050") Pitch, 451 Series

The 3M socket 451 series allows for much higher connection density using less board space. 3M socket 451 series increases design flexibility – its small size allows for placement in dense or compact spaces. The 0.050” pitch allows for more terminations in a compact space.

Designed for versatility as well as space savings when used with 3M™ ribbon cable, The 3M socket 451 series is a robust connector in a small package. It features a 0.050” pitch socket body in multiple position counts, along with a cover and optional strain relief. Center polarization is available. Optional friction latches reduce overall connection time and help prevent accidental disconnection. The 3M socket 451 series uses IDC connection to mass terminate flat flex cable in end as well as feed-through termination.

The 3M socket 451 series offers a connector in a very small package and with the following options:

  • Fine pitch delivers high connection density in a very small space
  • 30 μ" Au and Au flash available plating versions offer multiple mate/unmate cycle option levels at different price points
  • Available friction latch configurations enable increased protection against accidental disconnect when using a box header
  • Optional strain relief accessory provides additional security to help guard against damage when users pull on a terminated cable

3M™ Shrouded Boardmount Header, 1.27mm (0.050") Pitch, 452 Series

The 3M header 452 series is designed to maximize design flexibility while minimizing PCB footprint for ribbon cable connections. The 3M header 452 series mates with the 3M socket 451 series and increases design flexibility – its small size allows for more compact terminations.

The standard shrouded header features center slot for polarization and is available with or without ejector latches. The 3M header 452 series is available in multiple position counts. The 3M header 452 series uses IDC connection to mass terminate flat flex cable in end as well as feed-through termination.

The 3M header 452 series is designed to maximize design flexibility while minimizing PCB footprint. They mate to 3M™ Ribbon Cable Wire Socket Assembly 1.27 mm (0.050") Pitch, 451 Series and are available in the following configurations:

  • The standard shrouded header is available with or without ejector latches. This innovative assembly method allows the addition of positive latch and ejection functionality with minimal size addition.
  • 30 μ" Au and Au flash available plating versions offer multiple mate/unmate cycle option levels at different price points
  • Vertical mount, right angle mount, thru-hole and SMT configurations available
  • Tape and reel packaging for SMT version enables use in automated placement applications
  • Lead-free process capable
  • PCB standoffs enable pin-in-paste processing capability
